Union minister Suresh Gopi calls Indira Gandhi ‘mother of India’ | India News

NEW DELHI: Union minister Suresh Gopi stirred political waters on Saturday when he described Indira Gandhi as the “mother of India” and late Congress chief minister K Karunakaran as a “courageous administrator”, labeling them as significant figures in India’s political landscape, as reported by PTI.
He also hailed Karunakaran and Marxist veteran E K Nayanar as his “political gurus,” stressing on the deep influence they had on his political career.
The BJP leader, while visiting the memorial of Karunakaran, “Murali Mandiram” located in Punkunnam, offered glowing praises for the late leaders.
Gopi’s visit to the memorial holds significance, especially considering the recent electoral history in Thrissur. In the April 26 polls, Gopi clinched victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, thwarting the aspirations of Karunakaran’s son and Congress leader K Muraleedharan, who finished third in the triangular contest.
However, Gopi’s homage to Karunakaran sparked controversy, with the BJP leader urging mediapersons not to interpret his visit politically. He clarified that his visit was to honor his “guru” and maintain the relationships he shared with Karunakaran and his family.
Reflecting on his admiration for Indira Gandhi and Karunakaran, Gopi highlighted their significant contributions to Indian politics. Despite facing political opposition and allegations, Gopi reiterated his respect for the late leaders and their legacies.
In addition to his visit to the Murali Mandiram, Gopi also paid respects at the famous Lourde Mata Church in the city. However, his past actions, such as presenting a golden crown to the idol of St Mary during his daughter’s marriage, drew criticism from political adversaries, alleging the crown was not made of gold but copper.
Gopi’s victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat marked a significant milestone for the BJP in Kerala, amidst a fiercely contested three-way battle between major candidates from the Congress, BJP, and CPI.
