Naidu’s back with a bang in Andhra, new disha in Odisha | India News

Amidst the excitement of Lok Sabha elections, the two big assembly polls saw major upsets as BJP uprooted Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, ending an unbroken 24-year stint in Odisha, and N Chandrababu Naidu made a dramatic comeback in Andhra Pradesh with his TDP-led alliance ousting YSRCP’s YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
BJP rode anti-incumbency sentiment against Naveen, harping on emotive issues like Odia asmita and identity.Among seats declared till 10pm, BJP had won 65, BJD 51 and Congress 14 in the 147-strong assembly. Naveen lost one of the two seats he contested from, Kantabanji.

In AP, Naidu would be the first CM to get a fourth term. His father-in-law and TDP founder NT Rama Rao had got three terms in united AP. While the alliance won 164 seats (TDP 135, Jana Sena 21, BJP 8) in the 175-member assembly, Jagan lost the status of the leader of opposition as YSRCP, with just 11 seats, could not win the minimum 18 to get the status.
