Internet Cafe Death: Young man’s death goes unnoticed for 30 hours in China internet cafe

In a tragic incident, a 29-year-old man was found dead at an internet cafe after staff mistook his lifeless body for someone sleeping. The man, who frequently visited the cafe, passed away during an extended gaming session, and his death went unnoticed for 30 hours.
The man entered the cafe on June 1 for a long gaming session. It was not until June 3, at 10 pm, that a worker at the cafe called the police. The worker had tapped the man on the arm, expecting him to wake up, but found that his body was cold, a South China Morning Post report said.
“Based on the breakfast residuals left on the desk, he did not have lunch on June 2. He possibly died suddenly on the morning of June 2,” said a police officer, according to Jimu News.
The man’s brother-in-law, surnamed Chen, expressed concern and frustration over how the death went unnoticed for so long. “He sat in an open area instead of a closed partition. There should have been employees checking on him and noticing his strange behaviour,” Chen said.
The cafe’s boss described the deceased as a regular customer who appeared healthy and typically spent about six hours per visit.
The boss added that the two employees on duty at the time did not realize the man had “slept” for an unusually long period, as they often face irritable reactions from customers when waking them up.
The incident is currently under investigation by local police.
Sudden deaths have been a recurring topic in Chinese media, with recent incidents including a 23-year-old migrant worker in Jiangsu province who died in his dormitory after working over 10 hours a day for a month, and a 19-year-old man who passed away immediately after consuming a cold drink following a basketball game in 2022.
