Farmer’s son from UP bags President’s gold medal at NDA | India News



PUNE: The last two days have been unprecedented for Ravindra Gupta, father of Shobit who won the President’s gold medal for securing the top spot in the merit list for the National Defence Academy‘s 146th course.
A marginal farmer from Dhuvla Karimnagar in UP‘s Shahjahanpur district, Ravindra told TOI: “I never imagined he would be the gold medallist of the academy.”
“I own a small farm and earn a meagre income from poultry.I, irrespective of circumstances, wanted to provide the best education my son could get. So I borrowed money to fund his private hostel so he could prepare for Sainik School. All our efforts have proven worthwhile,” he said.
Shobit went on to study studied at Sainik School in Satara. He attributed his success to the school for motivating him to join the NDA. Silver medallist Manik Tarun and bronze medallist Anni Nehra came from Army backgrounds and studied in Sainik schools. While Tarun is the son of a retired naib subedar, Nehra’s father served in the infantry.
Tarun, an academy cadet adjutant, said, “Commanding the parade is the most coveted honour for any military cadet. It was the most precious moment of my life.” He studied at Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, and was an adjutant at the college as well.
