‘Can’t push back Bangladeshi refugees’: Mizoram CM to PM Modi | India News

NEW DELHI: Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma on Saturday told PM Narendra Modi that the state would not forcibly deport Zo ethnic people from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).
According to an official from the state home department, close to 2,000 Zo ethnic individuals from Bangladesh have sought refuge in Mizoram since 2022.
CM Lalduhoma said that numerous individuals from the Bawm tribe, an ethnic group among the Mizos, have sought refuge in the state from neighbouring Bangladesh since 2022, with many more attempting to enter the state.
They began seeking sanctuary in November 2022 after the Bangladeshi Army launched a military operation against the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA), an insurgent group.
The two also talked about relocating the Assam Rifles’ base from central Aizawl to Zokhawsang on the eastern outskirts of the state capital, and the rollout of Mizoram government’s key initiative, the hand-holding policy, as per the statement.
