2 woman killed, 3 children critically injured in mass shooting in Chicago

Two women lost their lives, and three young boys were left in critical condition following a mass shooting in Chicago‘s Greater Grand Crossing neighbourhood on Thursday morning, as reported by the Chicago police.
According to Deputy chief Don Jerome, officers were alerted to shots fired in the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue around 6.15 am. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered five individuals who were shot, according to a report from CBS News.
The victims, identified as two women aged 22 and 42, and three boys aged 5, 7, and 8, all sustained gunshot wounds. The officers immediately provided first aid to the injured. The 42-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while the 22-year-old woman was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Centre, where she later passed away. The three children were rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
Initial investigations suggest that the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute that occurred at the residence. Witnesses reported seeing two cars pulling up to the area, from which several individuals emerged and opened fire on the home using a rifle and a handgun. The shooters then fled the scene in an unknown direction, and no arrests have been made at this time.
A local resident who heard the gunshots and ran to his window described the incident, saying, “Thought it was fireworks, it wasn’t fireworks. Two people jumping off the porch they had masks on so I couldn’t even see no face they took off and they went right. They went straight down. I go to run back in the house to get away from that.”
Desmon Yancy (5th) expressed his sorrow and called for an end to the violence, saying, “This senseless violence has to stop. Personal conflict and guns its become a bad combination. You know, the summer is just getting started; I don’t want to stand in front of another group of microphones and have another discussion about the pain that’s causing our communities.”
Area 1 detectives are currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
